A BOND of Cwmbran (Argus July 4) argues that penalty-points as well as fines for motoring offences, makes everything equal between the rich and famous, and the rest of us. But how can that be?

My understanding is that the Courts have discretion when handing out points and/or disqualifications, therefore the well-heeled are the very people who can afford expensive lawyers to plead for leniency. Walt Jackson on the same page calls it an irritation, I agree, but unfortunately it’s an aspect of life that will probably never go away.
My support of fines-only for lane-hogging on motorways and some dual-carriageways is that most drivers know when they are doing it, and judging by my European experience a fine is normally sufficient, but I would favour adding penalty-points when dealing with more persistent offenders.
