WELL done to all the organisers of the events laid on at World Heritage Day in Blaenavon. There was something for everyone and it took a lot of hard work by those involved. The inclusion of the acknowledgment of the greatest ever sportsman in our heritage, Ken Jones, was great.
To visit and admire his statue in the town was long awaited. The effort and patience needed by those responsible for it being there is to be applauded. This includes all the kind people, both local and afar, who made donations, either personally or via the many fundraising events.
Grants from community agencies and others also made completionof the statue possible.
A statue in Ken’s memory should have been erected years ago and it was really pleasing that his wife Irene, son Philip and family were present that day when the wishes of many finally became a reality.
After the official unveiling of the statue on 27 March, it was removed for a short time for technical reasons. No one was more disappointed than all those involved in producing the statue of Kenneth Jeffrey Jones OBE. I am sure the community and others will take enormous pride in the statue and that future generations will be aware of the outstanding achievements of a local man who became an Olympic athlete and rugby star.
