THE CAP on benefits announced on Monday  is yet another example of the low politics being pursued by the coalition.

It may be popular among people who have been deliberately misled by Tory politicians and their friends in the Press, but “popular” does not mean “right” and to demonise those unfortunate enough to be out of work is contemptible.

There are far more people unemployed than there are job vacancies and that single fact is not going to be altered by harassing those without work. Knowingly creating and aggravating divisions in society is the stuff of dictators who don’t think twice about unleashing the mob against any minority. It is a way of gaining short term popularity, but it has long term consequences.
A government of integrity would seek to build unity in society; this government deliberately seeks division. The world, as a whole, faces enormous problems, many caused by a political outlook which sanctifies greed and makes heroes of billionaires.
The persistence of war, hunger, inequality and environmental destruction is only going to be ended if it is accepted that everyone on the planet has the same right to a decent quality of life, but there’s not much hope of progress in that direction from this government.
