MR Cameron is fond of pointing out that some Trade Unions donate to the Labour party, believing that this will discredit Labour, while at the same time drawing attention away from his party’s many splits, disastrous economic failure and brutal cuts.

The other side of this debate is who funds the Tories and what do they expect to get for their generosity? Since Cameron became leader, his biggest donors are hedge funds holders who have donated £1,384,070.58, private financiers £1,305,806.52, fund and asset managers £1,158,000, real estate £617,665.55, retail sector £551,100 and energy companies £158K.

Conversely trade union subscriptions to the Labour party work out at mere £3 a year per member. I feel that the words of one prominent Tory donor, businessman Peter Cruddas, who claimed that giving money to the Tories could prove ‘awesome’ for your business, tells us all we need to know.
I would argue that trade unionists have more in common with a greater number of the electorate than, say, those Tory backers, who grace the pages of the Sunday Times Rich List.
