REGARDING the retirement of Mrs Carmel Napier, it’s happened.
What I believe needs pursuing is the much-criticised attitude of the police commissioner, Mr Ian Johnston when required by respected Members of Parliament to answer to his actions leading up to the retirement of the former Chief Constable.
That he resorted to allegations that member Mr Chris Ruane was a “plant” by Gwent MPs surely demand proof, can Mr Johnston justify that comment?
He, as he would expect of others, should be respectful at all times regardless of who questions him. His diplomatic ability and even maybe common sense is surely in question.
Mr Keith Vaz MP stated it seems PCCs seem to be able to sidestep the statutory process for dismissing a Chief Constable. What an indictment on Westminster government.
The report from the Westminster Home Affairs Select Committee states Mr Johnston’s reasons for asking the Chief Constable to leave were “unpersuasive” and “unsubstantiated” by “concrete” examples.
I just wonder what happened to the “volumes” of evidence that Mr Johnston stated he had. If it was that compelling why did the report use the terms unpersuasive and unsubstantiated?
