I get despondent about those people who moan about Newport. Let’s face it, the city will never be a tourist hotspot, the better and older parts in the centre have been destroyed by successive councils.
Having said that, there is still lots to be proud of and utilised – The Usk, Transporter Bridge, Tredegar House, Caerleon and the Romans, and many scenic places in the suburbs. A Maritime Museum would help, but think of the pleasant places to go such as Christchurch and Ridgeway for spectacular views, and the hostelries for comfort and succour.
In fact, Newport is awash with fabulous and pretty places. These are added to by attractive housing areas like Malpas. The city centre is a totally different prospect.
The best buildings have long gone, and maybe it needs to be smaller. The lead-in to it is much improved. Now, Charlie Ferris’s idea for an Usk Regatta is an excellent idea as are the several other annual council-arranged events.
So, let’s keep it positive please, I am sure it will improve.
