I WAS delighted to see your front page story “City’s Pride” (July 17) on both Newport County’s and Newport RFC’s history-making sides. Being a staunch County supporter for over 60 years, it is good to see the team making favourable headlines and also to see the 1963 rugby side receiving their belated honour.
Being an ex-Bassaleg Grammar School pupil myself, I was delighted to see an old school classmate in the RFC photo, Graham Bevan, who played hooker on that historic day and was, at that time, competing with the legendary Bryn Meredith for the hooker’s spot. Graham is pictured on the extreme left in the back row of the photo.
Sadly, Graham passed away some years ago, but I know he had a sister Cathlene and I believe his mother and relatives lived on High Cross estate at Rogerstone.
My question is, will Graham’s relatives be given anything to mark Graham’s achievements? I certainly hope so because it does seem a bit sad that Graham, and probably others no longer with us, won’t enjoy this honour, but I think the families of all the teams should have something to show for their loved ones’ achievements.
