THE only response to Cllr Gez Kirby is to quote the leaders of the Labour party.
Ed Miliband and Ed Balls said that councils who give a living wage which is a rise above inflation are irresponsible and should avoid doing it if services are under threat. So why are only Caerphilly and Cardiff councils having a living wage? Because Labour controlled councils like RCT, Neath, Merthyr, Blaenau Gwent and so on can see it is not affordable and would affect public services.
Let’s not forget it was a Labour government and their boom and bust policy that put us in the mess we are in. How many hundreds of millions of pounds wasted on the London dome and the Olympic Games? I never thought Labour Caerphilly Councillors would go against the advice of their London masters.
If the living wage is successful among the voters, then Cllr Kirby will get elected next time. I urge every voter to question their local Labour councillors, AM’s and MP’s to justify why Caerphilly council should give a pay rise to a living wage for council workers.
Who can forget the former Labour Treasury chief secretary Liam Byrne, who left a note for his successor, David Laws, saying: ‘I’m afraid to tell you there’s no money left’.
