I refer to your article of July 25 in relation to Torfaen County Borough Council’s resolution to call for the Westminster government to repeal the “bedroom tax” and that the council look at ways to mitigate the disastrous effect that it is having on the families who are less well off, 1,500 of which have already gone into rent arrears and are going without the basics for everyday living.
The council is calling on all UK councils to submit data to all parties represented in Westminster on the impact of the tax and ask them to commit to its repeal.
It must be stressed that a majority vote carried the motion in Torfaen but there were a minority number of members who did not feel they could support the motion and the people they represent, and abstained or voted against. It was a recorded vote and so the names of members and how they voted are on Torfaen’s website or with democratic services.
Cllr B John Cunningham Upper Cwmbran Ward
