WHAT an anti-climax the much anticipated unveiling of Newport Gwent Dragons’ new kit turned out to be, with pretty boring designs for home and away jerseys.
I’ve long thought that the Dragons’ jersey would be the perfect vehicle to try, at least, to raise some interest from the areas that stayed away from Rodney Parade from day one of regional rugby.
Incorporating the colours of Gwent’s other teams in the ‘Merit Table’ era would go some way to heal some of the wounds caused when the WRU wrote off years of rugby history by forcing out Gwent’s ‘super six’ in 2003.
Considering some of the coloured creations around – Harlequins, Racing Club de France – surely a home could be found on the Dragons’ jersey for Abertillery’s green and white, Pontypool’s red, white and black, Newbridge’s blue and black, Cross Keys’ black and white , and Ebbw Vale’s red, green and white?
I bet they’d shift a few more than the near same again creations unveiled at Caldicot Castle, no doubt to a trumpet.
