IT IS with some considerable regret I read of Cllr Ron Jones passing.
I knew Ron for many years, not only from Pill, but also at the council. He certainly had a wicked sense of humour and was an expert on the funny things that councillors got up to.
He was so prolific in this that I gave him a special place in my book Carry On Councillor, as the indomitable ‘Cllr Glyn Martino’.
He participated for many years in local government, both in Newport and Gwent councils, eventually returning to Newport when the county council was abolished. Many stories I could tell about Ron, but remember his involvement when mass housing clearance in Pill took place in the ‘70s. Also, he was a stalwart supporter of Newport County AFC and rarely missed a match.
There are now very few of the old council troupers left and Ron Jones will surely be missed for his funny remarks, vast knowledge and love for Newport.
