CLIVE Shakesheff (South Wales Argus, August 29) has hit the nail on the head regarding the Con/Dem government’s use of the austerity programme to privatise public services and to abolish the welfare state. They are using the crisis to further entrench the neo-liberalist pro-corporate agenda which enriches further the elite business class by making working people pay.
In fact, there is absolutely no need for austerity and the cuts being imposed by, for example, Gwent councils. Nobel Prize-winning economists Paul Krugman and Joseph Stiglitz have stated as such. Councils must fight the cuts, not impose them!
