CLLR NIGEl Dix likes to look back at the previous Plaid administration, but what about the Labour administration before that? When the living wage could have been introduced, during the so-called New Labour good times. Plaid is a democracy and Plaid councillors vote on personal ideas and public feedback, in other words they listen to what their voters say.

My question to Cllr Dix and any other Labour councillor is: If the living wage is such a good idea and the time is right, why only Caerphilly and Cardiff councils are having gone for this policy? Do Caerphilly councillors know better than their future Labour chancellor and prime minister, Ed Ball and Ed Milliband? As both leading Labour politicians have called for a wage freeze among the public sector. I thought Labour were against regional pay. So why have they created a regional pay structure within South Wales?

The implication of the living wage is this: The pension and wage bills will rise. The council workers currently on the living wage because of their seniority and responsibility will be on the same wage as those on a lower grade than themselves, so will they get a pay rise? I only hope the living wage wouldn’t be reflected in job losses, and can Cllr Dix promise this?
