WITH regards to Mr Clive Pittas’ second letter in the South Wales Argus (Tuesday, September 3) I feel I need to set the record straight and as I have worked at Rodney Parade for the last 13 years as a safety steward and I feel I am in a good position to do so.
Mr Pittas states a cover has been put over the away dugout because of the behaviour of the football supporters. This is not true because we have had trouble with the away dugout ever since I have worked there. Rugby supporters have thrown beer over the away dugout and would complain about the away teams standing up in the dugout blocking their view and have also abused players from the away teams. This was happening before regional rugby was in place and it has continued ever since. As stewards we were asking for the dugouts to be covered years before the football was there.
The entrance along the Hazell Terrace was blocked off to help with congestion. Blocking this entrance will help spread the fans more evenly throughout the whole of the terrace. The new barrier being installed will again help keep the main walkway clear for safety reasons. These changes are being made for both the rugby, football and supporters’ benefit. A majority of the supporters follow both sports and hopefully many more will start to follow all teams that play at Rodney Parade.
