I WAS shocked and enraged to read a piece that the MP for Newport East had contributed to the Argus on September 2, regarding falling wages and the rising cost of living in her constituency, blaming it at the door of the coalition government It may have conveniently escaped Ms Morden that when Labour were in power they voted, unlike German and France, to allow EU citizens from much poorer eastern European states to join the British workforce: a dream come true for most large employers, but significantly lowering the wages for the UK worker. I’m afraid Miss Morden that’s the way the private sector works supply and demand.
It may have also escaped her notice that council tax doubled under her party’s watch, leaving most families now working the whole month of January just to pay the council tax. Most years, it was rising at three times the rate of inflation.
I would not mind if the town we were living in had seen vast improvements, but unfortunately for Newport, this certainly is not the case: where did all that money go?
On housing: under her government’s watch, house prices tripled under a huge, unprecedented credit boom, locking many working class people out of the housing market and pushing them into expensive private sector rents.
I have no qualms about politicians writing articles in newspapers, but please get your facts right.
