THE LIVING wage is an extra 25p per hour for the 3,000 low-paid workers. WIth that extra money, the council could provide 121 new jobs per year or save a bus service. Those jobs could mean more social care workers to help with the council’s pensioner population. These extra workers could spend more time with the elderly, instead of popping in and out and rushing between visits.
I know a few low-paid workers who are currently on the sick with stress, as demands and pressure have increase with no extra staff. If the living wage was ok within the Labour Party, how come only Cardiff and Caerphilly councils are willing to pay extra for it? Why are a future Labour prime minister and chancellor calling for a pay freeze among the public sector workers and warning us of future spending cuts under a Labour government? Caerphilly councillors are out of touch with their masters and the voters. This one policy will mean fewer Labour councillors being elected next time. They have shot themselves in the foot.
