I HAVE long conceded that Newport is a one-party city and for socio-economic reasons, the residents will always vote for Labour.

Recently, I wrote to both MP Paul Flynn and AM John Griffiths, asking why the Labour administration in Cardiff Bay were happy to squander money on a archaic language, a loss-making strip of Tarmac outside Barry and an air shuttle service to North Wales for the convenience of two assembly members, when Newport is starved of much-needed funds and parts of the town now resemble a third world shanty town.

I pointed out that any MP or AM worth their salt would go down the WAG all guns blazing, fighting tooth and nail for a fair deal for Newport.

Both to their credit did reply, both stating that they could not see what was wrong with Newport – talk about head in the sand. John Griffiths blamed it on the Coalition cuts: ironically, his reply came on the same day as it was announced the WAG wase to pay £50m for a airport and subsidise its running costs to the tune of over £1m a year.

Paul emailed me back stating that I was ignorant about his role as MP and that I should read one of his many published books.

Please: if we must stick with Labour, can we not have a more dynamic, proactive representation willing to fight for the town?
