I WRITE in response to comments made on the Argus webpage in response to my letter printed in the Argus on September 25 under the heading ‘Why the blockage?’ This reader comes across as a know-it-all. If he is such a knowledgeable person, how did he not notice the error in my letter?
The walkway that is blocked off allowed access from John Frost Square to Austin Friars, not Friars Walk as stated.
Can this person tell me and others where to find all the information regarding the reason for blocking access from the bus station to John Frost Square and from John Frost Square to Austin Friars that he claims is so easy to find? I have seen nothing in the bus station or in the city centre.
The Capitol Car Park has been in an unsafe condition for a long time. Why all of a sudden is it in such a bad state that use of the walkway is blocked off? This very strangely coincides with Newport council’s decision to destroy the Chartist mural on inside the walkway.
Is Newport council afraid that, if the area is not blocked off to the general public, protesters will prevent access to the walkway when the demolition work is due to begin? Perhaps the first blow of the pick axe will be made by the writer of the comments on the webpage.
Why can’t the walkway be made safe by the city centre developers and incorporated into the plans for the new shopping centre?
