YET again the possible construction of an M4 relief road is in the news (Editor’s Chair, Sept 26), with the two-lane section of the present M4 at the Brynglas Tunnels being blamed for most of the congestion. But is it the whole story?
A couple of weeks ago I drove down the St Julian’s section towards the tunnels in the Cardiff direction, and because of other traffic my speed was under 50mph despite it being the variable limit set at the time. However, halfway through the tunnels and still on the two-lane section the vehicles in front started to accelerate away. Why? Because the limit was back to 70mph and frustrated drivers were obviously putting a move on.
I’ve said it before; the variable speed limit should be scrapped. Slowing traffic to the same speed on all the lane is making the congestion worse, causes lane-hogging, which is supposed to be illegal, and goes against all the rules and advice about driving on motorways.
