SO THE Heritage Hacker has struck once again, I refer of course to the demise of the Chartist mural.
Personally I have never been a great fan of the mural but never the less it is, or should I say was, a fabulous work of art depicting a most important period of Newport’s heritage. A representation, but about as good as we will get here in this city.
So why are we surprised at its demise? We are looking at the same council which wanted to destroy a priceless ship, the same council, who built a flat bridge across the Usk isolating the Town Reach.
Allowed a bypass to isolate the Transporter Bridge and not provide a footbridge, place a bingo hall on a historic river bank, and sit back and watch as our most precious buildings were either demolished in the night or burnt to the ground. Waves, Pigs and headless horrors reign in a vulgar supremacy, while a quite beautiful example of a Victorian Main Street falls into dereliction.
Well done the Heritage Hacker, never a quiet moment!
