THERE seems to be little balance in the tedious soap opera that is the Chartist mural debate.
There is, however, plenty of posturing.
The way some people are going on one would think the council had just covered Michelangelo’s Cistene Chapel masterpiece with artex.
Well the mural is no more and I for one am glad!
It was part of the derelict John Frost Square.
An area where the only person you would find smiling would be the operator of a crane with a very large demolition ball attached to it.
This vision is about to become a reality. Hallelujah!
The only scandal I can see is not the demolition of a 1970s creation in a damp and dreary subway that had long outstayed its welcome, but the betrayal of the Chartists and their achievements by many of the people of Newport themselves if, the average turnout in Newport council elections is anything to go by.
I would suggest 35 per cent turnout is not wide of the mark.
This means around 65 per cent of Newportonians were unwilling to get off their lardy backsides to ensure the deaths of those 19 people were not in vain.
People of Newport you have the council you deserve.
You have reaped what you have sown. Blame no-one but yourselves.
