THOSE of us working to improve transport in Wales were horrified last week to see the new European map of priority routes. It missed out Wales completely. Not a single road, railway, port or airport was included in the main European “corridor”.
It doesn’t mean that no European transport funding can be spent in Wales because there are secondary routes. But only the corridor routes qualify automatically.
It is the UK government that made this decision. But where was the Welsh Government in this? Why wasn’t there an outcry about what the UK had done?
We desperately need to improve transport links to address, for example, the congestion on the M4 around Newport. For me as a Welsh MEP, I work for the Welsh national interest. Once again we see on a European level what happens when London decides – Wales loses out.
