AT THE beginning of this year, an army of workmen clad in hi-vis jackets and hard hats invaded the Greenwood Tower block on the St Julian’s Estate. Their task was to begin refurbishment work on the block as part of Newport City Homes £10 million project to bring its three tower blocks up to Welsh Housing Quality standard.
The work is being run with military precision by Wates Living Space’s on-site manager Robert and carried out by a workforce who are all named ‘Trev’ and one ‘Mrs Trev’!
Many of them are Welsh. They are all very pleasant, polite and friendly. Some singing, joking and laughing as they work even on a Monday morning.
The inevitable noise, dust and disruption makes life difficult for residents but the team do all that they can do ease the burden. The work is being carried out to a very high standard including fitting new windows to the rear of the block making a vast difference to the appearance of the block and to the warmth of the flats.
Much more has been done and there is much more to be done!
I hope that Santa rewards the workforce well!
