IN HIS letter published on 2nd December, Mr Brian Jelf accused the Newport Civic Society of “deafening silence” regarding the Chartist Mural.
I would like to set the record straight. Prior to the demolition, the Civic Society encouraged the council to look at every plausible option to relocate it.
Immediately following the work, we supported calls for the pieces to be saved for use in a future art work. Since then we have been actively engaged with other organisations in proposing alternative commemorations. Our role is not to grab headlines, but to stand up for heritage in a constructive manner. Preserving the history of Chartism in Newport is, and always will be, very important to the Civic Society.
