I AM WRITING to bring to the attention of your readers affected by the ‘Bedroom Tax’ some very significant legal developments.
Last week in Monmouthshire Magistrates’ Court an appeal against the ‘tax’ was successful. The court agreed with a previous tribunal in Bolton that only a room furnished with a bed could be classified as a ‘bedroom’. This means that councils have to inspect all dwellings before making housing benefit decisions about ‘under-occupancy’ they cannot accept the word of the landlord about the number of ‘bedrooms’. Everyone affected by the ‘tax’ should appeal their 2013-2014 decision. If you need support for this there is information on Facebook or you could contact the local campaign group secretary@torfaentuc.org.uk.
