IN REPLY to Julian R. Powell’s letter on March 12, I can understand what he is saying and why he is saying it. But I cannot agree with him, yes we must move forward, but not at Newport’s historical past, and in particular its maritime past and the river Usk has a long history in maritime work, the Old Town Dock was part of that river. If as much enthusiasm was shown in this, and a maritime museum built on the river band, places of historical interest bring in tourists and that means more money coming into the city and more jobs. But sadly the city planners don’t seem to see that. And also they must save the Newport Ship and also no more retail parks which is killing business in the city centre.
Mr R. K. Rogers Malpas Newport
