THE public outcry following the wanton destruction of Newport’s Chartist Mural proved the artwork’s effectiveness. There are those who wish to dampen down that effectiveness by replacing it with something more demure. Do they not realise that this further insults the public intelligence?
It was Newport City Council who tore our mural from its cross so it is they who should replace it, but not from the public purse. It must be rebuilt bigger, better but permanently, and in a prominent place. Nothing else will do! Our mural is dead. Long live our mural!
