CAERPHILLY council intends to close six bowling green’s which are Oakdale, New Tredegar, Ynysddu, Senghenydd, Machen and Penyrheol. This would save the council £100,000. Local bowling clubs provide exercise, social contact and friendship for every member of the community which include the retired members. Age Concern Cymru encourages OAPs to get out more and socialise. With these closures there would be an extra stretch on social services with more cases of loneliness.
Closure would be a devastating blow to the community and the council need to look at alternative ways of saving money. These clubs do a lot of work with the young and old in the community which would be lost if they shut. Still the council can afford the living wage for its staff.
