I READ with interest the online comments on the fine imposed for a what was described as a racially aggravated Facebook post reported on March 30th. Many related to challenging the implied description of Islam as a race which indeed it is not. The offence is correctly named ‘racially or religiously’ aggravated. The Act of Parliament concerned is the Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006 in summary an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom which creates an offence in England and Wales of inciting hatred against a person on the grounds of their religion.
May I respectfully suggest that if the exact nature of the charge had been correctly described in your report, a lot of heat would have been taken out of the subsequent correspondence. To my mind this inaccuracy did considerably more harm than good. This was patently a religiously aggravated offence, convicted and sentenced as such. G Perry, Caldicot
