ON A regular city centre shopping jaunt last week, I came face-to-face in Newport’s Cambrian Road with what looked like a TV police documentary or a scene from the latest James Bond film (compliments of Rosemary Butler, Labour AM!). Several police officers, police squad cars, police vans and crowds of onlookers appeared when an individual caused a mêlée by abusing a lone police officer and violently refusing to cooperate.
An extra security police van at the rear of the long line of other traffic could not get through due to the narrow one-way, one-lane access. An ambulance or a fire engine could not have got through. Cambrian Road, Upper Dock Street (rear of market/bus station), High Street and other city centre streets are very unsafe, especially for senior citizens, children etc.
Newport Labour City Council needs to take action now, especially following the shocking loss of a brilliant off-duty policewoman hit by a bus in Swansea recently due to a badly designed city centre road.
