I WAS delighted to read in the Argus on April 23 that there is a possibility that cruise ships would include The Guardian in future destinations. However. I am also aware that our valley has been denied this prospect for many years because of the wanton destruction of our sites of interest and our heritage.
As a boy from Lewis Street, Sofrydd, who had a panoramic view of the valley from his front door, I had in front of me the Crumlin Viaduct, the Navigation Colliery and the terminus of the Crumlin to Brecon Canal. The terminus was used for turning barges and was surrounded by pubs and shops.
Just imagine barge trips, a popular pastime now, running to the terminus. Passengers making the very short trip to walk across the viaduct (as I did as a boy – illegally, I might add) and then sitting to enjoy a pint while others explored the shops. (There would be many by now).
Local historian of those days Brinley Evans made desperate pleas both in council and Argus articles to save the bridge. He said,”You will deny the future enjoyment of many people”. I have mourned the loss ever since.
