BARRETT Homes built St Julian’s Meadow off Llantarnam Road in Cwmbran and built houses within falling range of some fine 60+ year old Lombardy Poplar trees. No surprise then that those new residents within range wanted the trees down.
When I warned last year about the danger to the trees (not the houses), Torfaen Borough gave the trees protection, I’m told, for one year.
David Wilson Homes have now built Abbey Park next to St Julians Meadow and have felled all the trees.
A hard hat tried to convince me that the trees were unsound, while standing next to a stump that was clearly perfectly healthy. All the trees were healthy. The area which included the trees could have made a fine green space with the existing footpath going through it. Torfaen Planning must have been sleeping through this one.
