FROM the way the saga of the M4 relief road is evolving it appears the Welsh Assembly is determined to push ahead with their “Black Route” option irrespective of any opposition or consequence. Matthew Kennerley, Director of Associated British Ports, pointed out the detrimental affect this proposal will have on Newport Docks. Now we hear it could also lead to job losses at Magor services besides any well publicised effect on the local environment.
Perhaps it’s time to put all alternatives and possibly some new routes back on the table for discussion and the best possible solution achieved and not one that is forced on us by the establishment. One can not but wonder whether the black route is being promoted as the quicker option with Cardiff in mind. If it becomes evident that the proposed scheme will be detrimental to Newport then I, Newport City Council and others, strongly oppose this route.
I realise this will place the Labour-controlled city council in direct opposition to the Labour-controlled Welsh Assembly but this should not enter into it as they were elected by Newport citizens to promote and safeguard the interests of Newport.
