Whenever Newport Council is challenged regarding the problems being experienced, closure of care centres,a rundown shopping centre, lack of public toilets, poorly maintained roadsides and parks to name a few, the response is a lack of funds due to cutbacks. This situation could be improved by generating income from a well organised parking enforcement team. Parking within the city centre is currently a joke with vehicles parking on double yellow lines for 8 hours a day, parking in disabled bays with no blue badge and leaving vehicles on pavements. At the next council meeting I would suggest councillors leave the chamber for 10 minutes and walk around the streets surrounding the civic centre and observe the problem firsthand. If the council feel incapable of administering an efficient parking enforcement team I would suggest a private company undertake the task with the council receiving a percentage of the parking fees obtained.
