UPDATE 10.20am: It has now been revealed that a horse which was involved in the collision has died.
The incident is now known to have occurred between a vehicle and a horse. The injuries sustained by the animal were of such severity that the decision was made to put it down.
A spokesperson for Gwent Police said in a statement: "We received a report of a road traffic collision on the A472 near Pontllanfraith this morning at around 5.20am.
"The collision involved a vehicle and a horse who was badly injured. A vet attended to the injured horse however a decision was made for the horse to be humanely destroyed.
"The road was closed for a period but was re-opened at around 8.10am."

UPDATE 8.38am: The scene of the incident is now clear and traffic has started to ease.

UPDATE 8.19am: An AA update confirms that the incident occured eastbound on the A472, not westbound as it previously stated.

UPDATE 8.11am: The A472 remains partially blocked, and local roads are busier than usual, particularly the B4251 (Newport Road, Sir Ivor's Road) in Pontllanfraith, and Commercial Street in Pontllanfraith.

The A472 is also very busy around the Crown roundabout.
A COLLISION, reportedly involving two horses, has resulted in the partial blockage of the A472 near Pontllanfraith.
The incident, which occurred at around 6.20am this morning, happened near the roundabout with the A4048 is affecting the road travelling in both directions.

Traffic has begun to build up around the scene and this is likely to worsen as rush hour approaches.
