A BABY and children’s store could be coming to Newport city centre as part of new plans approved by council planners.

The shop, to be known as Top Image Nursery, won planning approval this month and would open at 133 Commercial Street, in the heart of the city.

The premises is currently empty and was formerly a tattoo parlour called Luna Ink Tattoo Studio.

Under the new plans, the site would be converted into a retail outlet and “sell a range of baby and children’s goods”, planning documents show.

The new shop would also create two full-time and two part-time jobs, and planners have granted permission for the premises to open seven days a week – from 9am until 5pm on weekdays and Saturdays, and from 10am until 4pm on Sundays.

Planners have also received an application to turn the site into a fast-food outlet.

Assessing the proposal, council officers noted the shop would be “in keeping with the surrounding retail nature which would contribute towards the viability and vitality of the city centre, particularly given it would replace a currently vacant unit”.

The site is “in a highly sustainable location served by public transport links and nearby car parks” and can “also be easily accessed by bike and on foot”.

The occupants of nearby properties were consulted on the new plans but did not offer any objections.

Newport City Council planners granted approval to the baby shop proposal, subject to conditions.

Council documents show 133 Commercial Street is also the subject of a separate, ongoing application to change the tattoo parlour into a food and drink premises, but no decision has yet been made on that proposal, which would involve the site being converted into a business called Chicken Central.
