Google, on Monday (June 24), shut down its podcast app in the UK.

The tech giant announced in September last year that it would be discontinuing the Google Podcasts app - which was first launched in 2018 - in favour of YouTube Music.

At the time, Google said: "We’ll be increasing our investment in the podcast experience on YouTube Music — making it a better overall destination for fans and podcasters alike with YouTube-only capabilities across community, discovery and audio/visual switching.

"Later in 2024, as part of this process, we’ll be discontinuing Google Podcasts. As part of this process, we’ll be helping Google Podcasts users move over to Podcasts in YouTube Music."

"I will sorely miss it" - Google users hurt after podcast app discontinued

The Google Podcast app was shut down for good in the UK on Monday (June 24), having already been discontinued in the US back in April.

Users of the Google app have taken to social media to express just how "gutted" they are it is closing down.

One person, on X (formerly Twitter), said: "Google Podcasts goes away today and I can't explain how truly hurt I am. It's been a very integral part of my life for over 5 years. I will sorely miss it!"

While a third person, prior to the shut down, said: "Gutted that Google Podcasts is folding in four days. I'm too old to migrate."

Google said they were hoping by discontinuing Google Podcasts and focussing on YouTube Music, it would help them build an "amazing product" that rewards creators and provides fans with the "best podcast experience".
