THE last horses to follow column in 2012 yielded five winners.
Hidden Cyclone, Our Father and Restraint of Trade were the lucky three, although the latter was subsequently banned in the doping scandal which has rocked the sport.
Here’s five who should enjoy a pay day this year:
MAIN SEQUENCE - 4yo gelding, David Lanigan Rewarded this column’s each-way support in the Derby when coming a creditable second, he makes his seasonal reappearance at Ascot today.
A lovely sort with a decent turn of foot, there should be more to come this year.
A win this afternoon would tee him up for a date with stiffer opposition later on.
DAWN APPROACH- 3yo gelding, Jim Bolger Mightily impressive in the 2000 Guineas, building on an unbeaten two-year-old campaign.
The Irish star now has the Derby as a target and while there are question marks over stamina, his style of racing gives him every chance of seeing out the trip.
The mile held no fears at Newmarket and if anything it looks like he has improved again this year.
One point of caution; there’s no point backing him now as the price has totally gone. He should ease a little by race time on June 1.
KINGSGATE NATIVE- 8yo gelding, Robert Cowell It might seem ridiculous to put up a sprinter of this age, but trainer Cowell has a habit of rekindling the enthusiasm of old sprinters.
This one came a good second at Newmarket on May 4 and after a quiet few years he may be capable of better this year.
My belief comes after seeing him narrowly touched off at Newbury in September, where he had no luck at all.
He’s clearly a decent tool and there’s going to be a day when everything goes right.
RIDASIYNA- 4yo filly, Mikel Delzangles The French bay filly was imperious in victory over Izzi Top at the 2012 Arc meeting.
Probably needed her comeback run against stiff opposition, I would expect her trainer to favour a trip to Britain this year to take on the big guns and her connections have plenty to look forward to at middle distances.
SIR JOHN HAWKWOOD- 4yo gelding, Sir Michael Stoute Made a winning return at Chester this week after using up much energy to get to the front from a wide berth.
Disappointed for this column on one outing last year, but has ability in spades. It will be interesting to see what the handicapper does, but the gelding should improve a few pounds for a step up to 1m 4f.
