WHAT fun, what joy, what a source of entertainment, it is time to play round 550 of ‘kick Gavin Henson when he’s down’.
Remember Henson? The bloke who helped Wales to two Grand Slams and who played for the Lions? The jewel in the crown of a re-emerging Welsh rugby side who clearly has supreme natural talent?
Yeah, that one. Well you’ll never guess what he’s done now! Rugby’s bad boy has only gone and.... been assaulted!
Yes, assaulted. Sparked out in a city centre pub less than a week into his new career at Bath, with the whole incident now going viral online.
Firstly, how very 21st century, a sports star assaulted in a pub and it’s filmed on a mobile phone and becomes an internet sensation.
But I fail to see where the amusement is in this one with so many Welsh rugby followers taking to Twitter to joke and celebrate about the news.
Many might argue that they’ve simply run out of chances for Henson, that he’s used up his goodwill and is no longer, in their eyes, a viable option for Wales, someone to consider as anything other than a perma-tanned clown.
However, that entirely misses the point.
While Henson is undeniably the architect of his own downfall, he’s also a huge waste of talent. That is never something to celebrate. Unfulfilled greatness is a cause of consternation, not celebration.
And in what alternate reality do we revel in people being assaulted anyway?
I’m not calling Gavin Henson a victim, I’m not even telling you he’s not been a fool to himself many times. But his story is nothing to celebrate.
