ST JULIAN played Belle Vue in the Newport League at the Glebelands and won.

Ron Hoare, Lionel Prothero, Mike Masters and William (Billy) Martin lost 11 – 22 to D Couch, P Widdows, R Davies and W Tent, while Robert Gage, Nigel Critten, Ken Spencer and Joe Nicholls defeated G Randall, D Simms, L Silcox and P Hinton 26 – 13.

Robert Nalor, Ryan Lloyd, Mike Poyner and Terry Leighton lost 10 – 13 to D Wipcut, T Elliot, R Morgan and P Alder while Ashley Naylor, Dave Husselbee, Ron Whitehead and William (Billy) Hull won against A Fullwood, H Jones and J Hiscocks 16 – 13.5, this was due to M Thomas not making it and made the match score 63 – 60.5 with 10 points to St Julian and four to Belle Vue.

On Saturday St Julian entertained Firbank at the Glebelands and after a close-fought game came out winners by two shots. With two rinks finished, St Julian were all aboard on the boards and the third rink finished with one shot being picked up. The final rink were playing their last end. Firbank were holding three shots when the St Julian third drew the shot with his final wood. The Firbank skip tried with his first to remove it and failed, but he did it with his last wood giving Firbank three shots. But the St Julian skip had the last wood of the end and drew the shot to give St Julian a two-shot win.

Ashley Naylor, Dave Husselbee, Ron Whitehead and William (Billy) Hull won 24 – 16 against G Hodkinson, J McLoughlin, E Rawlings and B Eger, while Robert Gage, Nigel Critten, Paul Watts and Joe Nicholls went down 12 – 30 to P Rackham, M Singleton, M Harley and M Jordan. Robert Naylor, Lionel Prothero, Mike Masters and William (Billy) Martin won 23 – 18 against R Edwards, A Redger, J Bartlett and P Collins, but Steve Russell, R Lloyd, Ken Spencer and Terry Leighton beat C Coldrick, T Mansfield, M Cleaver and S Manley 22 – 15, making the match score St Julian 81 (12 points) Firbank 79 (two points).

On Sunday St Julian travelled to Whiteheads to play Caerleon in the Terry Youngson Shield and came away well beaten 51 – 82.

Robert Gage, Ken Allcock, Paul Watts and Ron Whitehead wen down 8 – 15 to J Roberts, A Dunn, B Richards and R Smith, while Robert Naylor, Mike Masters, Mike Poyner and William (Billy) Martin lost 10 – 19 to K Oliver, K Clarke, D Lee and M Jones. Steve Russell, Ryan Lloyd, Ken Spencer and Terry Leighton went down 22 – 27 to G Oliver, G Gibbs, R Whelan and D Hill, while Ashley Naylor, Nigel Critten, Dave Husselbee and William (Billy) Hull lost 11 – 21 to J Davies, P Elliott, K Jones and K Davies. Caerleon are now in the final against Newport Athletic Club.

This week St Julian Bowls Club entertain Llanwern in the NBA tonight and travel to Islwyn Park for a Friendly on Saturday.
