GLAMORGAN’S Murray Goodwin finished six runs short of a double century as Lancashire hit back strongly on day two of their LV= County Championship match with Glamorgan at Old Trafford.
Simon Kerrigan enhanced his growing reputation with his second seven-wicket haul in five days for the Red Rose county.
The 24-year-old left-armer spun his side to the top of the Division Two table with seven for 63 in the second innings of the win over Northamptonshire at Wantage Road last week.
And as Glamorgan lost their last six wickets for 66 to slip to 474 all out, he became only the third Red Rose spinner to take seven-fors in successive innings since 1960 – and the first since Gary Keedy in 2004.
He finished with seven for 162 from 49.1 overs having taken his first two during the opening day.
Lancashire then made a strong start to their first innings by reaching close at 93 without loss from 40 overs thanks to Karl Brown and Luis Reece, who will begin day three unbeaten on 48 and 42 respectively.
Kerrigan’s haul included Goodwin for a superb 194 off 354 balls, an innings spanning seven hours and 40 minutes.
Kerrigan is now the leading wicket-taker in either division of the Championship with 39 in his ninth match of the season after taking five of the seven Glamorgan wickets to fall on day two and five of the last six.
Goodwin was excellent for his highest score since May 2011 when he scored 274 for Sussex against Yorkshire.
He hit 21 boundaries but fell caught at square-leg off Kerrigan trying to pull his 22nd, leaving Glamorgan at 448 for eight.
The first Welsh wicket to fall in the day was Jim Allenby for 92 when he was trapped lbw by Glen Chapple to end a 155-run stand for the fourth wicket with Goodwin.
Kerrigan then had Mark Wallace caught at slip, Nathan McCullum caught at mid-on, Graham Wagg caught at short-leg, Goodwin caught at square-leg and Dean Cosker trapped lbw.
Chapple wrapped up the innings when had John Glover caught and bowled.
While Glamorgan still hold the upper hand in the contest, they will know they could yet face a tricky end to the contest on a deteriorating wicket should Lancashire bat past their first-innings score.
Brown and Reece, although watchful, looked in little trouble during their 40 overs at the crease.
They are Lancashire’s fifth different opening pair in Championship cricket this summer and none of the other four different pairings have returned a partnership of three figures or more.
GLAM JOINED AT TOP OF T20 TABLE A devastating knock by Richard Levi helped Northamptonshire join Glamorgan at the top of the Midlands/Wales/West Division of the Friends Life t20.
The Steelbacks enjoyed a comfortable 17-run victory against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham.
The powerful South African, who had a spell playing club cricket for Abergavenny, blasted an unbeaten 110 off 62 balls, with 15 fours and four sixes, as his side ran up 206 for three after losing the toss.
In reply, Gloucestershire plunged to 21 for three as David Willey (four for 32) claimed three for five from his first two overs.
Alex Gidman, who blasted 49 off 19 balls, and Ian Cockbain (60) ensured respectability, but they were never seriously in the hunt and closed on 189 for six.
The result means Northamptonshire join Glamorgan on eight points from five games while Gloucestershire can forget the quarter-finals, having lost four of their first five matches.
