TODAY is decision day for triallists Jamie Edge and Ryan Doble as they learn whether they have done enough to earn a contract with Newport County AFC.

Manager Justin Edinburgh will sit down with former Arsenal midfielder Edge and ex-South-ampton striker Doble after training today and inform them of his decision.

Both players have been with County since the squad returned for pre-season training on June 27 and Edge has featured in all three friendlies.

Blaenavon-born Doble played at Swindon Supermarine and in Tuesday’s 6-0 win at Taunton Town, where he earned a late penalty as a substitute.

“We’re in for training on Thursday and I will have a think about the triallists over the next 48 hours,” said Edinburgh after Tuesday’s victory.

“As soon as I’ve made a decision I’ll be honest with those two players.

“I’m delighted with what we’ve got at the moment and, as well as Jamie Edge and Ryan Doble, if the right player became available we’d always look to improve the squad,” he added.

“I wouldn’t want more than 21 players going into the season so there is room for another two to come in.”

Edinburgh was pleased with his team’s win in Somerset, courtesy of a penalty from Andy Sandell, further goals from Christian Jolley and Danny Crow and a first-half hat-trick from Aaron O’Connor.

“We had a good attitude to the game, which pleased me,” he said.

“It was another fitness exercise for us but we were clinical with our chances and we got more minutes for everyone.

“As the weeks go on we obviously look to get fitter and sharper and I think we’re doing that.

“We looked a bit tired towards the end but generally we performed well.

“I think we’re on schedule for August 3 and the whole atmosphere around the football club is one of excitement.

“The players have worked tremendously hard and there is a lot of anticipation.”

Edinburgh reserved special praise for Robbie Willmott, who impressed at right wing-back against Carl Zeiss Jena last Saturday and in a more attacking role on Tuesday night.

“Robbie has got a lot of ability,” he added. “He’s come back fit and focused and he’s pushing hard right now. He looked very threatening and, even though he got something like six goals in 10 starts last season, I think there’s a lot more to come.

“It was difficult for him to get into the side regularly last season but his versatility will be key this season. He showed what he can do at wing-back in Jena and looked good further forward against Taunton so he will be a real asset to the team.”
