PANTEG are still hunting a treble after securing a place in the semi-finals of the Gwalia Welsh Cup.

The Glamorgan and Monmouthshire League, Division One leaders secured a 38-run home success against Pen-arth on Sunday.

They will now host Ammanford, who beat Swansea.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Panteg made 217-6 from their 40 overs with opener Carwyn James making 59 off 56 balls and captain Ian Bird striking 44 from 37.

The visitors, who are also in the Division One title shake-up, started well with three of their top four – Rhys Morgan (35), Adam Shantry (48) and Tom Sidford (39) – getting starts.

But Panteg got key wickets at key times and made light work of the lower order to bowl out Penarth for 179 in the 38th over.

Bird and Lloyd Smith were the stars with the ball, claiming four wickets apiece for the cost of 50 and 30 runs respectively.

The success ensures a terrific season continues for Panteg, who are eyeing promotion to the Premier League and take on Usk in the Macey Shield final in Chepstow on Sunday.

“Things are going well for us and our win against Penarth was probably our best of the season,” said Bird.

“They were winning for most of the game because 250 was probably par and it’s hard to defend at our ground when it’s warm and dry.

“But we hauled it back and showed really good character to win, especially given how important the game was.”

Panteg will be looking for revenge against Amman-ford, who knocked them out of last year’s tournament thanks to their tailenders rallying for a one-wicket win.

After stunning Ynysygerwn to make the last eight, Blackwood headed to Port Talbot hoping to claim another Premier League scalp. However, the Division One side were always under pressure after batting first at The New Mansel.

Opener Neil Reardon top-scored with 38 in a total of 122 before bowler Robert Matthews gave the visitors some faint hope.

He claimed three early wickets but the Pirates steadied the ship and Anthony Thomas (59 not out) and Dean Morris (44 not out) safely saw them home in the 19th over.

Port Talbot will play Llandudno after they won the north Wales quarter final against Northop.
