TWO Newport boxers are fighting for titles at the Newport Centre tonight.
Alway’s Craig Woodruff, already the Welsh lightweight champ, takes on Merthyr’s Dai Davies for the British Masters super-featherweight title.
And St Joseph’s fighter Frankie Borg looks to claim his first belt as he faces Bargoed’s Gary Cooper for the Welsh middleweight title.
It will be Borg’s first fight since he lost by knockout to Danny Butler at the Newport Centre just over a year ago and he’s desperate to get back into the ring.
“I’m feeling good. It’s been a long time since I was last in the ring – more than 12 months – so I can’t wait to get started again,” he said.
“I lost last time so it’s a big step to come back in for a Welsh title over ten rounds but I feel I’m ready for it.
“I’ve only seen him fight three rounds, to be honest, but I know he’s got a punch on him and he’s only been stopped once, so I can’t take him lightly.
“But I can’t wait to bring a belt back to St Joes. I had a few injuries after I got knocked out but I’ve been training hard since the start of the year.
“I’m 33 now but I’m in great shape, I’m the fittest guy in the gym and now I want a title as well. It’s about time.”
Woodruff is also confident of success against Davies.
“I’m training hard now; there is no more messing about,” he said. “It showed last time and it will show again.”
Also in action on the Warrior Promotions bill are local favourites Jerome Samuels and Craig Kennedy.
The action starts at 8pm and tickets will be available on the door.
