FORMER Newport Gwent Dragons wing Tonderai Chavhanga is set to pen a deal to return to the Cheetahs in South Africa.

The 29-year-old Zimbabwean, who holds South Africa's record for tries in a game after scoring six on his Springboks debut, left Rodney Parade at the end of his contract last season.

And he is poised to play Currie Cup rugby for the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein when the tournament starts on the weekend on August 9.

The four-times capped speedster will sign a short-term deal that will be extended if he makes an impression.

"We have Tonderai on board for the rest of the year," chief executive Harold Verster told SARugbymag.co.za.

"He wants to make a comeback, so he needs to prove to us that he can add value. He's fully fit and looking very confident."

The affable Chavhanga was a popular figure at Rodney Parade despite his two seasons in Wales being hindered by injuries.

He scored 10 tries in 28 appearances with highlights being an LV= Cup hat-trick against Northampton, a crucial pair of scores at Edinburgh and a terrific derby match-winner against Cardiff Blues.

Chavhanga came through the ranks at the Cheetahs before going on to play for the Stormers, Western Province, Golden Lions and Lions.
