SQUAD numbers only really matter to those on the playground or those in marketing offices, but there can be little doubt they are becoming part of the ‘branding’ of a player.

When I mention CR7, I of course refer to Cristiano Ronaldo, and other players like David Beckham and most recently GB11, Gareth Bale, have also used their number as part of the wider ‘brand.’ Bale’s is an all package deal, he gives you thirty goals a season, a heart shaped celebration and the number 11. The aftershave and clothing line comes later this year.

How-ever, my hope is that the latest addition to this line-up will be one of our own, Wolver-hampton Wanderers’ new number 14, Lee Evans.

The ex-County academy star it seems is set for a huge season after playing 90 minutes for Wolves at Preston on Saturday.

It is wonderful to see Evans getting a chance at such a massive club and my previous tip on this page that he’ll eventually represent his country is seeming less and less outlandish.

Generally though, Evans is just the leader of many former Exiles currently doing the club proud in the Football League.

Sam Foley’s Yeovil enjoyed a dream start to life in the Championship on Saturday and Danny Rose helped Oxford to a 4-1 triumph at Ports-mouth in League Two. Rose isn’t the only player set for a reunion with the Exiles this term either, Craig Reid joining Southend last week from Aldershot. However, it is Evans who can potentially make the entire city proud and it seems he’s found the ideal influence in manager Kenny Jackett who is pushing youth at all costs this term.
