NEWPORT County’s newest striker Chris Zebroski believes the Exiles can leave the opposition trailing in their wake this term... literally.
County sprinted out of the blocks to mark their return to the Football League on Saturday, smashing Accrington 4-1 to go to the summit of League Two.
The Exiles travel to Championship outfit Brighton tonight (kick-off 7.45pm) but Zebroski, who fired home twice on Saturday in a dream debut, believes County can give their more illustrious hosts the runaround.
Indeed, the former Plymouth striker thinks there are few sides who can compete with Newport’s sheer pace in attack.
“I was pleased with the start of my partnership with Christian Jolley, we got three goals between us and I thought our understanding was pretty good, our games suit one another,” he said.
“We both like to run in the channels, arguably we are similar players but I thought I saw signs of a great partnership.
“We didn’t play together that much in pre-season, but he was really good to play alongside and hopefully you won’t see too many faster partnerships than Christian and I.
“Who is faster? I wouldn’t like to say, but that’s because Jolley is faster, especially with the ball!
“But then Aaron O’Connor would probably have something to say about that.
“That’s the thing, there is a lot of competition, that’s exactly what you want, because it keeps everyone on their toes. Our pace can cause lots of teams problems this season.”
Zebroski was thrilled with his man of the match contribution on Saturday, admitting he feels a great pressure to repay the faith shown in him by boss Justin Edinburgh. Zebroski has had some off-field troubles, but is hopeful they are in the past.
“It was a great debut for me, I can’t pretend otherwise, the gaffer told us to press from the front and try and cause problems and it worked out well for us,” he explained.
“I haven’t scored many goals like the second one I got on Saturday, we are judged on goals, that’s what we are paid for and it’s nice to get off the mark so quickly because it stops any pressure building up on you.
“The 125-year anniversary, Newport’s return, my debut, there was a lot going on, a lot of distractions for us, but we used the occasion to our advantage.
“This is a second chance for me in the Football League, the gaffer has been brilliant with me, he’s an excellent man manager and I hope he’s going to keep getting the best out of me.
“I wasn’t anxious about our ability to do well at this level, football is all about momentum and this club has so much.”
Zebroski is relaxed about tonight’s visit to the seaside.
“Brighton will play good football, we’ll have to work hard without the ball but it’s a freebie for us, a great experience.
“We won’t feel the pressure, because it won’t be on us.”
