NEWPORT sprint star Mica Moore boosted her chances of representing Wales at next year’s Commonwealth Games by beating her main rival at the recent Welsh International meet.

The 20-year-old finished first in the 100m at the Cardiff International Athletics Stadium – ahead of Elaine O’Neill, who ran for Wales in the 2010 Comm-onwealth Games in Delhi.

The duo then teamed up with Hannah Thomas and Rachel Johncock for the 4x100m relay and they destroyed the opposition to win comfortably in a time of 45.49s – just 14 hundredths of a second off the 30-year-old Welsh record.

Moore, a former Newport Harrier who now runs for Cardiff, has been named on the Commonwealth Games selection shortlist for Glasgow 2014 and she believes she is on target to achieve her goal.

“I was very happy to beat Elaine because it made up for finishing third behind her at the Welsh Champs,” said Moore, a second year student studying sport and PE at Cardiff Met University.

“The time wasn’t so good because of the headwind but it was nice to finish ahead of Elaine.”

The former Bassaleg School pupil, who is coached by her father Lawrence, is a multiple Welsh champion at age group and senior levels in 60m, 100m and 200m and has also won medals at UK level.

She must now run the B standard time of 11.5s to qualify for the 100m individual race in Glasgow.

“My PB at the moment is 11.8s and I have until the Welsh Champs next summer to run that,” she explained.

“I am confident I can get that time and I hope that Wales take a relay squad as well.

“We have a really good team with Elaine, Rachel, Hannah and several other young sprinters,” she added.

“We ran pretty fast last week and I think we can break the Welsh record.

“We’re rivals but we get on really well and we push each other to go faster.”
