AT times James Hook has been hindered by his versatility but the Wales back has been happy to go on the move for Perpignan, writes Chris Kirwan.

The 28-year-old has won 70 caps but has been shifted from pillar to post at international level and has recently been overlooked by Warren Gatland and his coaching staff.

He has seen fly-halves Rhys Priestland and Dan Biggar move ahead of him in the pecking order, the bulldozer approach is preferred in midfield and Leigh Halfpenny has full-back nailed down.

Hook is much more valued at Perpignan, whose supporters voted him their player of the 2012/13 season, but that doesn't mean he has things his all way at the Stade Aimé Giral.

He has shifted back following the summer arrival of France fly-half Camille Lopez from Newport Gwent Dragons' Amlin Challenge Cup opponents Bordeaux.

Hook was full-back in Perpignan's opening day 26-23 win against Castres and last weekend's 28-27 loss to Stade Francais.

The Welshman isn't bothered by the number on his back in the Top 14.

"I've been very impressed by what I've seen of Lopez," Hook told Rugby World. "He has a great left boot on him, and so with my right foot it gives us more kicking options.

"But we also both like to attack so I'm full-back at the set pieces but more of a second 10 in open play. It's great for me because I'm really getting my hands on the ball."

Hook also captained the side against the Parisians and nearly led them to victory, a last-minute Jules Plisson drop goal stealing the spoils.

"It was the first time I've captained a side since I was about ten," said Hook, who has amassed 25 points this season. "I really enjoyed it and didn't change any aspect of how I play."

Former Dragons captain and Wales lock Luke Charteris is yet to feature for Perpignan this season because of a knee injury.
