NEWPORT County AFC have released third choice goalkeeper James Bittner.

The 31-year-old, who left Hereford United at the end of last season, signed a one-month contact with the League Two newcomers at the end of July.

He did not make a competitive appearance for the Exiles with teenager Jamie Stephens filling in while number one Lenny Pidgeley recovered from personal problems.

Pidgeley is now back in the side and, although manager Justin Edinburgh was keen to keep Bittner on board, the player has revealed on Twitter that he has left the club.

A message on Bittner’s account reads: “All the best to @NewportCounty for the rest of the season! Great set of lads & I've really enjoyed my short time here!”

Bittner’s release will free up funds for Edinburgh to bring in a midfielder before Monday’s transfer deadline.

The Exiles boss confirmed yesterday that he is in talks with at least one target and he hopes to conclude the deal after tomorrow’s League Two trip to Scunthorpe United.
